Brief History of the Area

The first inhabitants of St. Simons Island were at various times Mocama, Timucua and Guale Indians (pronounced “Wallie”). Archeologists tell us these first islanders were tall, well-built people. Their diet consisted of fish and game and vegetable crops of beans, corn and melons. Artifacts indicate they traded with other tribes from as far away as the Mississippi Valley. The first Europeans to St. Simons were probably French and Spanish explorers. In 1540 DeSoto began his exploration of the Southeast. He was looking for a fabled city of gold. In 1566 Spain sent missionaries and soldiers to establish Spain’s claim to the New World.
